Why Do We Give?

There are as many motivations for a person’s charitable giving as there are people; giving of your resources and time to help others is one of the most personal acts you can make. But while our giving stories are all unique, they likely share one or more of the following motivations:

To help fulfill your life’s goals and passions

To feel a sense of value and satisfaction

To leave a lasting imprint on society while making a significant difference

To perpetuate a certain viewpoint or philosophy

To unite family members around a purposeful mission

To honor or memorialize a friend or loved one

To give something back to a community

To fulfill a responsibility or desire to be a leader in a community

To connect with others who share our interests and passions

To benefit from tax advantages

To express gratitude or to say "thank you"

What are YOUR reasons for giving to charity?
It's an important question to consider as you develop your giving plan.

How Much Should You Give?
Determining how much to give to charity is a personal choice. The only legal requirements for giving levels relate to private foundations, which are required by federal law to pay out annual grants totaling a minimum of 5 percent of their assets.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING LEVELS
The appropriate charitable giving amount will be different for every person. Deciding how much to give to charity can be influenced by many factors beside your financial picture, including your family situation, retirement goals, and personal values and passions. A professional advisor can help you determine your appropriate charitable giving level. In addition, here are a few resources that may help you get started:

Ways To Give:
Charitable giving comes in many forms — all of them helpful and beneficial to society. The key is to give in a way that is most consistent with your personal values and passions (see Planning Your Giving). While the ways to make a gift to charity are numerous and varied, most fit into one of nine major giving options:

Make a Direct Gift to Charity
Make a Planned Gift to Charity
Give to or through a Community Foundation
Create a Community Foundation
Create a Private Foundation
Develop a Corporate Giving Program, Foundation or Fund
Create a Supporting Organization
Join or Form a Giving Circle
Participate in New Forms of Giving

This information is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather to serve as a first step in helping you move to the next phase of your giving plan. Each donor has unique, specific interests and conditions that must be analyzed in detail together with a professional advisor.
