Unless you can say NO to some things, you cannot truly say YES to anything. There are always going to be more projects, initiatives and worthy causes than you could possibly serve. If you don't know how to say NO, you will commit to so many of them that you subsequently lose the power to serve any of them with excellence.
Often it is a need for acceptance and recognition that drives people to over-commit in this way. At other times it is a lack of wisdom, or fear of rejection or reprisal from superiors.
Practice the language of saying NO when appropriate.
1) Sensitive & Caring: I would really love to do so, but given XYZ situation, I honestly can't.
2) Direct & Clear: No, I choose not to participate right now.
3) No Room for Questions: I'm sorry but it is impossible right now...no way I can participate.
