PTSD Awareness Day – June 27

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after you have been through a traumatic event. A traumatic event is something horrible and scary that you see or that happens to you.

During this type of event, you think that your life or others' lives are in danger. You may feel afraid or feel that you have no control over what is happening.

Anyone who has gone through a life‐threatening event can develop PTSD. These events can include: 􀂃

Combat or military exposure 􀂃

Child sexual or physical abuse 􀂃

Terrorist attacks 􀂃

Sexual or physical assault 􀂃

Serious accidents, such as a car wreck 􀂃

Natural disasters, such as a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or earthquake After the event, you may feel scared, confused, or angry. If these feelings don't go away or they get worse, you may have PTSD. These symptoms may disrupt your life, making it hard to continue with your daily  activities.

Where to Get Help for PTSD

The National Center for PTSD

PTSD Help Network:

Each VA medical center and many VA clinics have PTSD specialists. You can also find a VA PTSD Program or a Vet Center near you. Or call the 24/7 Veteran Combat Call Center to talk to another combat Veteran:

June is Home Safety Month

                                        June is Home Safety Month

According to the Home Safety Council, 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits happen each year as a result of accidents in the home. There are plenty of precautions you can take to make your home safer for you and your kids. Here are some things you do, but keep in mind that this list hardly scratches the surface of
all the ways of you can stay safe around the house.

1. Install Smoke Alarms & Check Them Regularly

– This may seem like a no brainer but many people don’t check the batteries in their smoke detectors often enough. Simply put, this can save your family’s life. And if you live in a two‐story home, make sure you have working smoke detectors on every level in your home.

2. Fire/Emergency Escape Plan

– This is an important thing to think about whether you have small infants or older children. You need to have a game plan in mind if there is a fire or some other emergency that forces you to flee in a hurry. And as your kids get older they will need to know what to do as well.

3. Set Your Water Heater to 120 degrees F

– This is baby proofing 101. It’s THAT important in preventing burns.

4. Use a Bath Mat

– A simple tip that can save everyone in your family from a horrendous injury.

5. Store Medicines, Poisons, and Anything that Says “Caution” Away From the Kids

– Keep cleaners and poisons in a locked bathroom and all medicines in a cabinet away from little hands.

6. Practice Stair Safety

– If you have stairs you need to practice proper safety measures and encourage. Keep the stair clear of toys, clothes or anything that can be tripped on and lead to a nasty fall. Make a strict rule of no playing or hanging out at the top of the stairs. And keep a light near the stairs at all times so that late night trips up and down don’t become dangerous. If you have younger children (or even older ones) use GATES.

7. Practice Kitchen Safety

– Turn your pot handles in, never leave food cooking on the stove while you are not in the kitchen or very nearby, teach kids that the stove is hot and to stay away!
