Thought for Today

It’s best to climb the ladder of life slowly and carefully,
Than to race for the finish.

Live your youth and live it with God
Be wise and serve your purpose in life
You are special and there is only one you.

Live each day with a smile, remember there is someone
somewhere who is worst than you.

Seek help it’s just a matter of asking and let it known,
we are always ready to help you

Strive to the highest peak never give up,
never give in, failure is not an option.

Insomnia: No More Sleepless Nights

12/28/2010

I had a conversation recently with one of our FFC members, and she was very concerned about the insomniacs in her family.  You see, she has teenagers and young adults who are all in college.  Her keen observation is that they hardly sleep.  Upon further investigation, she became aware that it was a problem that not only plagues her children, but all of their friends and many others.

Anyone can suffer from insomnia, although sleeping problems are more common among women (especially menopausal), the ill, the elderly, smokers, and alcoholics. Sleep problems are, however, surprisingly common among young people. While it is not an illness and is in no way life-threatening, insomnia can be very distressing, frustrating, exhausting, depressing and at worst it can make you feel like you're going crazy.

Young adults and teenagers are suffering from an epidemic of Insomnia.  All over the country and the world, this is happening in a big way.  There are several reasons why our young people are becoming insomniacs.

Main Causes:  Insomnia is a condition that is caused by something else! Sometimes it won't be immediately obvious what the causes are in your own case, but the following list might give clues
  • states of mind - anxiety, depression, worry, anger, grief, anticipating a difficult event
  • change - moving house/city, starting university
  • environment - noise, discomfort, time zone change
  • pain - one of the commonest causes
  • medical conditions - heart, breathing, stomach, digestive, high blood pressure, arthritis, anorexia.
  • recreational drugs - including nicotine, caffeine, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, cannabis
  • sleeping pills and tranquillisers - can actually cause sleep disturbance
  • other prescription drugs - including some contraceptives, diuretics, slimming pills, beta-blockers, stimulants.
Some causes of insomnia can't be easily dealt with but most can.

What can you do about insomnia? A great deal. The good news about insomnia is that you can cure yourself - in your own way, in your own time and at your own pace. You may wish to enlist the support or help of your doctor, a college nurse or a counsellor, but you won't necessarily need to. However you must be prepared to make some changes in your lifestyle in order to sleep better.

There is help available.

Many personal decisions are made and problems solved through discussions with friends or family, a College Tutor or Director of Studies, a Nurse, Chaplain, your pastor, colleague, or your boss. However, at times it is right to seek help away from one’s familiar daily environment.

Family & Friends Connection recognizes the need for the disimination of relevant information among our youths.   Of course FFC exists to meet such a need.  We partner with different organizations, and we also do our research to find avenues that that give you the needed information, based on needs presented to us.

There are a number of issue that our youths and the youths in the community in general are faced with.  Right here, right now, we will provide a number of links for you to get information on the many areas of your life that you  have questions about.

Seeking counselling is about making a positive choice to get help by talking confidentially with a professionally trained listener who has no other role in your life.  FFC does not  have such a counsellor  YET, who can be committed to give unlimited one on one face time, or telephone time, so we will share some online resources that have proven to be very helpful.
